How to Take Perfect Graduation Photos

grad photos

Graduation season is officially here! Whether you are graduating from high school or college, you will want to document this huge achievement in your life. At Picture Keeper, we not only work to save your memories easily and quickly, but we also want those memories to be picture perfect! Whether you are capturing these moments on a professional camera, or a smartphone device, we want to be sure they are pictures you cherish forever. Here are some of our favorite tips to get the best graduation photos:

1. Take some pictures at home first

Taking pictures at home is an excellent way to get some close ups of the cap, gown, and tassel. It’s also a great time to take some family pictures, which will only get more difficult at the ceremony with large crowds of people. Be sure to get a few pictures without the cap and gown too!

2. Experiment with wide shots and zooming in

When your graduate is walking across the stage, you will not only want to be as close to the stage as you can but also be sure to zoom in to capture the details of the moment. It is also wise to set it up for continuous shooting to get multiple shots at the same time, so you have more than one chance to get the perfect shot! Don’t forget to get a shot of the whole graduating class! For this, you will want a wide shot! Also, we suggest to not use the flash to take your photos, it drains your battery!

3. Take some time to get pictures with friends

While you certainly want to get some pictures of the graduate solo with family, their friends are important too. After all, these are the people they have been making memories over the course of their school career! Get creative with some shots around the school. A fun idea can be a favorite hangout spot!

4. Fun Candid Shots

Throwing the cap in the air is always a classic shot, but there are even more fun ways to get a picture perfect candid shot! Check out Shutterfly for 75 candid photo ideas!

5. Editing your Photos

While it can be tempting to edit your photos throughout the day (Instagram anyone), it’s better to wait until after the day is over to edit your photos. While you can use programs like Photoshop, there are free or very inexpensive phone apps out there that make photo editing easy and effective. Check out this list of smartphone editing apps here.
