Clever Front Yard Halloween Decorating Ideas

Flying Ghosts

These spooky frights are some of the easiest front yard Halloween decorating ideas we’ve ever seen, and look great in groups hanging from large trees. You’ll need:

  • White Mylar Circle Balloons
  • Black or clear string
  • Large pieces of cheesecloth
  • Black duct tape
  • scissors

Attach string to Mylar balloons filled with either air or helium.

Cut cheesecloth to at least six pieces. You’ll want two pieces that are only two or three inches longer on all sides than the balloon, two that are five to ten inches longer, and two that are twelve to 18 inches longer.

Find the center of one of the small pieces of cheesecloth and use scissors to create a hole. Thread the balloon string through the hole and drape the cheesecloth over the balloon. Repeat with all the other cheesecloth pieces, alternating the order in which you add the different lengths to the balloon.

Cut two three-inch pieces of black duct tape into ovals for the eyes. Pull back one layer of cheesecloth and attach the eyes to the layer beneath, pressing down firmly. Make eyebrows and a small mouth and add them to the face. Pull the top layer back down, and hang your ghosts from trees or awnings.

Black Cat Pumpkins

If you’ve got young children, you need front yard Halloween decorating ideas they can help make. These carving-free pumpkins are sure to be a hit. You’ll need:

  • Faux pumpkins of different shapes and sizes
  • Hot glue gun
  • Black exterior paint
  • Two-inch foam paint brush
  • Black craft foam
  • Brown felt sheet
  • Scissors
  • Medium-tipped white paint marker
  • White craft paint and paint pen
  • Small craft paintbrush
  • Grey and brown pipe cleaners

Using the foam paintbrush, apply three coats of black paint to the faux pumpkins, allowing the paint to dry between coats.

Using scissors, cut two arrow-shaped “ears” from the black craft paper. Cut a small slot in the top of the pumpkin to fit the ears, and glue them into place.

Draw angled cat eyes onto the pumpkin with the paint pen and fill them in with the white craft paint. Cut a brown nose from the felt sheet, apply glue to the back of the nose in the center only and stick to the pumpkin. Cut three pipe cleaners in half and glue them into place under the felt nose.

Glow in the Dark Pumpkins

Another of the easiest child-friendly front yard Halloween decorating ideas, these plastic pumpkins are easy to make and look amazing under a blacklight. You’ll need:

  • White plastic pumpkins
  • Assorted glow in the dark paint colors
  • Black light

Kids can either paint dots and stripes on pumpkins or make their own spooky jack-o-lantern faces. To get the pumpkins to light up, shine the blacklight on them and watch them glow!
